What Are THC Carts?

What Is Live Resin?

Now, ladies and germs, it’s time to get to the nitty-gritty. Let’s define our terms and find out what the **** live resin is (and what it ain’t). 

Think of live resin as a chemical snapshot of the cannabis plant. On the molecular level (yeah, we’re busting out the lab coat, microscope, and superfluous jargon), the cannabis plant is teeming with mysterious compounds. You’d find a mouthful of these puppies in the plant’s milky-white trichomes. Trichomes carry a number of the plant’s aromatic compounds and ultra-trippy, deeply euphoric cannabinoids.

What Is Distillate?

THC distillate is a type of cannabis extract with a high potency of cannabinoids and a diminished terpene profile. Cannabis professionals make distillate by heating cannabis extract to a pretty high temperature, which lets them zero in on and box out specific cannabinoids. This is why distillate cartridges are so concentrated with a select few cannabinoids. It’s also why these carts don’t carry the same terpene profile as live resin carts. 

Live Resin vs. Distillate

We briefly ran over the differences between these two cannabis extracts, but let’s do a little more scientific deep dive behind the makings of these fun-fueling faves. 

Same Origins

Starting with the iconic hemp plant, with its perforated seven-fingered leaves, let’s get a li’l ear-deep in some canna knowledge. As a member of the cannabis family, hemp’s been getting a ton of favorable press lately. You can find hemp extract in gummies, syrups, vapes, and (of course) cartridges. On its own, hemp’s teeming with a flurry of compounds, like fan-favorite cannabinoids, aromatic terpenes, and mysterious milky trichomes. 

This is where all live resin and distillate extracts start: as long, tall, vibrant green hemp buds. After we pluck those buds from the plant, they’re in for one of two paths. 

Differing Extraction Processes

To make live resin, we pick the hemp buds from the plants and flash-freeze ’em. Flash-freezing is a process where cannabis buds are frozen immediately after harvest. This process locks all those sweet, snowy trichomes in place and keeps ’em fresh for extraction. It’s how we can keep all the flavors and aromas locked fresh inside the extract. 

To make distillate, we go through a completely different process. 

First, after we pick the hemp buds, we hang them out to air dry. This step takes away a lot of the plant’s natural moisture, which is really helpful; all that extra water would interfere with the extraction process. Next, we filter a solvent through the buds to strip away unneeded plant material. Then, we wade the extract through extreme hot and cold temperatures to sift out superfluous compounds, trying to highlight specific cannabinoids, like delta 9, delta 8, HHC, or THC-P. And finally, after we’ve wrapped up the final distillation steps, we have an extremely potent cannabis extract that features seriously high levels of THC cannabinoids. 

Different Cannabinoid & Terpene Profiles

But this distillate extract lacks a few disco features live resin is known for—mainly terpenes and flavonoids. This two-punch combo is what gives cannabis strains their aromatic details. When a strain carries soft notes of citrus, espresso, or diesel, that’s thanks to its terpene profile. To give distillate cartridges their flavors, we do add some strain-specific terpenes in at the end to capture similar flavors with a side of extra potent effects. 

Different Potencies

And that leads us to effects—the feature act in this debate between extraction methods. Because distillate cannabis extract has a more concentrated amount of cannabinoids, some users say it’s more powerful than live resin, while others say it is much more powerful than live resin. So, if you’re a newbie, it might be best to stick with live resin carts until you get a stronger tolerance under your belt.
